How Do I Know If I Need Therapy?

People tend to start therapy when they feel they are struggling with their mental health. That being said, you don’t need to be in the middle of a crisis to ask for support from a mental health professional. Therapists can cover a wide range of issues people struggle with. Finding a therapist you trust can help with personal development understand emotions better, heal from trauma, improve relationships, practice stress management, break harmful patterns, and more.

Some questions that might get you thinking about potentially starting therapy might be:

  • Do you have a hard time feeling or expressing your emotions?
  • Does stress and anxiety feel all consuming?
  • Do you experience challenges in your relationships?
  • Do you want to understand your sexuality/your relationship to sex more?
  • Do you struggle with mental illness(es) that you’d like to have treatment for?
  • Have you been through traumatic experiences that you’d like to heal from?
  • Do you struggle with accessing healthy coping skills when you are sad, anxious, angry, etc.?
  • Do you experience negative thoughts/beliefs about yourself?

Starting services of mental health, whether the first time or not, can bring up some anxiety. It’s completely understandable to be nervous given therapists learn so much about their patients in order to have a full scope of how they can offer support.

What kinds of mental health professionals offer therapy in Miami at Modern Intimacy?

While all Modern Intimacy clinicians are mental health professionals, there are academic and clinical differences between a therapist and a clinical psychologist. A therapist, also known as a Marriage and Family Therapist, can work with individuals, couples, families, and sometimes conduct group therapy.

Licensed clinical therapists are individuals who have graduated at a Master’s degree level and have obtained the necessary hours to legally and ethically conduct psychotherapy with their patients. Some therapists have graduated, but are working towards their official licensure, in which case, they are labeled an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist or an Associate Social Worker.

Clinical psychologists have continued their education past a Master’s program and obtained doctoral degrees within their psychological training. Clinical psychologists are similarly able to conduct individual, couples, and group therapy. In addition to providing psychotherapy, Clinical psychologists often conduct psychological assessments and testing.

If you are curious which clinical option is best for you, we are happy to talk with you about your specific needs and discuss the best therapeutic course in Miami, FL and throughout the state.

I’ve been in Therapy Before – What Can I Expect During My First Session?

The team at Modern Intimacy understands that starting therapy is a significant shift, and can feel overwhelming. We will do our best to ensure you feel safe, heard, and work hard to make sure it is a seamless as possible for you.

Once you’ve been aligned with a therapist on our team who is most qualified to help you reach your goals, you will receive a link for your first Telehealth appointment.

If it helps you to write down some main talking points, that might help you feel prepared, but it is not necessary. Your therapist will help lead the way in terms of the first session. You will likely be asked some questions about your life, mental health history, family background, and anything else that will help them get to know you as a whole person better. Once the background building is done, your therapist will move into more of the treatment planning aspect of therapy with you.

    Do You Accept Insurance?

We are not currently in network with any insurance providers. What we can do is provide what’s called superbills, or special invoices, that can potentially be submitted to your insurance provider for partial or full reimbursement, depending on your specific benefits. This is one way some of our patients are able to recoup some of the money they invites into their therapy sessions.

If you have questions about superbill eligibility and reimbursement rates, please contact your insurance provider directly.

I Think I’m Ready to Schedule a Session. What Are the Next Steps?

In terms of next steps, our recommendation is to schedule a free 30-minute consultation with Modern Intimacy’s Intake Specialist. You can pick a day and time on our consultation calendar that works best for you.

After you select a date and time, our Intake Specialist will be in touch to confirm the consultation and then give you a call at the scheduled time. During the consultation we can go over our services, discuss the therapists on the team, and answer any questions you might have.
