What if I’ve Tried Therapy Before and Didn’t Feel Better?

The work many people do in therapy is no small feat. For many, things often feel worse before they feel better as you are likely unpacking painful realizations. The fact that you are here, on a therapy practice website, likely means you are open to giving therapy another shot. There are myriad reasons why the therapy process might not work for everyone and there isn’t a universal answer, however, there are a few common situations.

A crucial part of therapy is the relationship between patient and their therapist. If you don’t feel comfortable or safe with the person you’re meeting with, then it becomes much harder to show up authentically and with vulnerability. One way that we can help potentially ease the stress of uncertainty is by providing consultations with our available therapists. During that consultation, you can meet with a therapist before booking an official session to make sure they understand your goals, have the training and skills to help, and feel like a safe person you can open up to. At the end of the day, this process is meant to benefit you and we’re happy to do what we can to ensure you feel like you’re in good hands.

In addition to feeling comfortable with your therapist, it also can help to learn about the modalities your therapist uses during the therapy process. There are many evidence based modalities that exist and therapists are typically more than happy to discuss the modalities they use and how they can specifically help you reach your goals.

What Modalities Do Modern Intimacy Therapists’ Use in Sessions?

Our therapists use varying modalities to support their patients throughout the therapy process. Some of those modalities include:

      • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
      • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
      • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
      • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
      • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
      • Trauma-Informed
      • Attachment Theory
      • Somatic Therapy
      • Psychodynamic
      • PACT Couples Therapy
      • IMAGO Couples Therapy
      • Feminist Theory
      • Exposure and Response Therapy (ERP)

If modalities seem intimidating, don’t worry – we are happy to answer any questions you have during a complimentary consultation. If you are looking for a therapist who uses a certain modality, we can also point you in the right direction during the consultation to ensure you’re aligned with the right therapeutic fit.

How Many Sessions Will I Need To Meet My Goals?

The length of therapy can vary based on a few factors such as how often your schedule and budget allows you to attend sessions and how open you are to the therapy process. There isn’t a one size fits all answer as everyone’s goals are different and need different levels of support.

A significant part of making progress on your therapy goals is doing the work and showing up. What does doing the work mean? It means that despite the hardships that come from working on yourself, your mental health, and your relationships, you know keep showing up with an open mind and heart. Growth is challenging for many people and often feels worse before it feels better. Our therapists can help you navigate intense feelings and provide you with the support to push through the pain.

If you have questions about therapy frequency, your therapist can provide a recommendation on the frequency that would be most effective based on your goals and unique needs.

I live in Los Angeles (or California) — can we do in-person or online sex therapy sessions?

For the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, all sessions are conducted via teletherapy sessions. At Modern Intimacy, only HIPAA-compliant video platforms are utilized, to keep you and your information safe and confidential. Online sex therapy has been demonstrated to be effective for most sex therapy goals.

When guidelines indicate it is safe to return to traditional therapy and in-person sex therapy sessions, you will have the option to maintain teletherapy or work with a provider at one of our locations.

I’m not near your LA office. Could we do sex therapy or other counseling through teletherapy services?

If you are not within a reasonable distance to work with one of our sex therapists in Los Angeles, that is not a problem. Modern Intimacy therapists can work with people in suburban or rural areas, via remote therapy, for all kinds of online sex therapy and coaching services via teletherapy.

All you need is a secure internet connection for live video conferencing. Modern Intimacy currently offers therapy and counseling services with Certified Sex Therapists to people who live in California, Florida, Illinois, and New York. Talking about sex and your sexual health concerns has never been easier.

What should I expect from a teletherapy appointment? How is it different from an in-person session?

Teletherapy has become the new norm when it comes to navigating therapy during the pandemic. There are some ways teletherapy is different than traditional, in-person therapy. One of the major differences is that you meet with your therapist via video instead of in-person at an office. A benefit to this arrangement is that you are in control of your environment, and can create a comfortable setup for therapy in your own home. Another benefit is that you have no commute, freeing up your day to focus on other things. You will be given a link to access your session at the scheduled time and in most cases, therapy will proceed as it normally would, only virtually. It can be helpful to choose an area of your home that feels comfortable, quiet, free of distractions, and where the wifi works successfully.

While the medium of teletherapy is different from in-person therapy, many people experience the same level of satisfaction and feel just as safe, seen, and heard.

Are there limits to the states in which you offer teletherapy? I really want to work with a sex therapist in Los Angeles, but I live somewhere else.

At Modern Intimacy, we can offer therapy services to people who live in California, Florida, Illinois, Colorado, and New York. However, if you live outside of these areas, we may still be able to help. While we are unable to offer teletherapy to those outside of CA, FL, IL, CO and NY, we offer several online coaching programs. These allow you to either work one-on-one with a coach or complete the course at your own pace.

      Our course include:

      • Porn Addiction Recovery
      • Revive and Thrive: Healing Trauma
      • Healing from Toxic Relationships
      • Women’s Sexuality

        Does Modern Intimacy Accept Insurance?

Our therapy practice is considered out of network and we are not currently paneled with any insurance providers. We know that therapy can be an investment and are happy to speak about how we can make your treatment sustainable.

While we do not accept insurance, many of our clients receive reimbursement from their insurance networks by submitting superbills, or special invoices, that many insurance companies accept. If you have questions about eligibility and reimbursement rates, it might be beneficial to give your insurance company a call as they can answer the questions that are more specific to your insurance plan.

If the financial aspect of therapy is a source of anxiety, we often will have sliding scale spots open for patients who need it. Modern Intimacy is also a training site that trains students while they work towards their hours for licensure. Services with students have a significantly lower rate that may make attending sessions more affordable.
