Do Modern Intimacy Therapists Work with Couples? What Can They Help With?

Couples’ therapists help clients work through myriad relationship issues and situations. If an issue keeps recurring or an event has caused you to feel overwhelming distress to you and/or your partner’s mental health and the overall functioning of the relationship, couples therapy might be a helpful option in creating a safe space to flourish.

At Modern Intimacy, we understand how important relationships are to clients’ overall wellbeing. When relationships are rocky, the stress can spill out into every other area of life. For this reason, working with a competent relationship counselor can help mitigate the challenges in your relationship, before resentment and apathy take over.

Some common relationship issues and relationship therapy areas our therapists in Los Angeles can help couples with include, and are not limited to:

  • Improving Communication

If My Partner and I Are in Couples Therapy, Should We Also Be in Individual Therapy?

While it’s not mandatory for all members of a relationship to do individual work as well, it can be an added avenue of helping you and your partner meet your relational goals. It’s great to work on things together, but sometimes, there is healing that needs to be done on an individual level.

If you and your partner are thinking of starting couples therapy with one of our therapists, you can also begin individual therapy with one of our other clinicians.

Couples therapy and individual therapy often are not to be done in tandem by the same therapist, but keeping all your therapy within our practice provides quick and convenient collaboration between your therapists, so you and your partner are supported in your goals. Our Marriage and Family Therapists work with both couples and families.

What Types of Couples Therapy Do Modern Intimacy Therapists Use in Session?

The decision of what style, or modality, of therapy to use in session can depend on certain factors and isn’t one-size-fits-all. Therapists often have styles of therapy that they gravitate toward, but some modalities work better for certain goals and relational dynamics.

Some of the common modalities our couples therapists use, include, but are not limited to:

    • PACT Couples Therapy
    • The Gottman Method
    • IMAGO Therapy
    • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples
    • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
    • Attachment Theory
    • Other Trauma Informed Models

Do You Offer Pre-Marital & Marriage Counseling?

Modern Intimacy offers couples counseling for folks of all forms of relationship dynamics, including those who are engaged and married. Our couples counselors can help you navigate any relational challenges, strengthen intimacy, work through communication obstacles, and many other common situations.

Whether you and your partner have reached a breaking point or want to explore ways you can get to know each other better, working with a specialized relationship therapist can help you reach your desired goals.

Is it Too Late to Try Couples Therapy if We’ve Discussed Divorce/Breaking Up?

Due to the stigma around couples therapy and the myth that only couples on the brink of breaking up go to couples therapy, it’s not uncommon for couples to start couples work when they are already at their wit’s end. If you’re at this point, it’s likely some damage has been done, however, that certainly doesn’t mean that all hope is lost.

Conversations around divorce or breakups can be incredibly challenging. Emotions can be intense, past wounds can be triggered, all which can impede on having healthy and productive conversations in the moment about this sensitive matter.

Where couples therapy can help in this department is helping to create safety and fairness during tough conversations. It can be hard to think calmly when emotions are so strong and a competent couples therapist can help bring everyone back down to a place of regulation and model how you can show up for each other more empathetically, even when you’re feeling triggered.

As long as everyone in the relationship is willing to come to session with an open mind and heart and is able to trust their partner and the process, it’s not too late if it feels realistic to commit to the work. Depending on how long you’ve been unhappy in your relationship, resentment and apathy might be at an all time high. If that’s the case, we’re more than happy to work with you and your partner to break through those barriers and support the best outcome for the relationship.

How Much Does Couples Therapy Cost? Do You Accept Insurance?

Prioritizing your relational health is essential. Relationship counseling is an investment, and it’s one that has the ability to improve your relationship in ways you might not have felt possible.

Modern Intimacy does not work with any insurance providers, as an in-network provider. However, we can provide you with a super bill for couples therapy sessions that can be submitted to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Eligibility and reimbursement rates can vary, so we recommend connecting with your insurance company to confirm what, if any, out-of-network benefits may apply.

Our team is comprised of different clinicians, with varying credentials and years of experience, and rates.
