What makes Modern Intimacy sex therapy different from other practices?
The connection between mental health, relationships, and sexuality is interconnected. Within an ever-changing cultural landscape, authentic intimacy remains a primary need. The way people relate to each other is evolving fast, but authentic connection remains a primary need for everyone.
Our Founder, Dr. Kate Balestrieri, and many staff belong to the American Association of Sexuality, Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and combine holistic mental health services, with education, inclusivity, sex positivity and philanthropy, in an effort to build community and ensure people stay connected in a meaningful way, in a modern world. At Modern Intimacy, we are committed to a set of strong values.

I’ve tried therapy before and I still need help. How are the Modern Intimacy therapy techniques different?
Sometimes, it can be difficult to find the right help and sometimes, even with the right help, it can seem like an intangible goal. Often, when you see progress in one area of life, it becomes clear that there are other concerns you would like to address. Try not to get discouraged.
At Modern Intimacy, we employ a variety of holistic therapy techniques that are geared to help you and your unique needs. Our clinicians are trained and certified in a diverse set of specialized skills, and we tailor each treatment approach to help you feel comfortable and address your specific needs.
How do I know if I need sex therapy? Can you help me figure out if I should see a therapist?
Sex therapy is a good place to start if you are looking to address any concerns related to your sexuality or sexual relationship. Your relationship to sex is tantamount to every other domain of your life. At Modern Intimacy, we are sex positive therapists, meaning we will not shame you and we will only suggest sex therapy if you have identified that there is something related to sex in your life that no longer works for you. A Certified Sex Therapist can help you if you are looking to address:
- A history of sexual trauma,
- Sexual dysfunction or sexual problems,
- The quality of your sex life, if you are sexually active,
- Your sexuality, sexual orientation, or gender identity,
- Any type of sexual behavior that has negative consequences in your life,
- Mismatched libidos between you and your partner,
- Concerns about sexual functioning,
- Different sexual fantasies and desires within your relationship,
- Pain during sex, Dyspareunia, Vaginismus, etc.,
- Erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation (early ejaculation), delayed ejaculation,
- An inability to orgasm, alone or with a partner,
- Shame about sex or your sexuality,
- Oppression related to sex or your sexuality,
- A desire to try an open relationship, polyamory, BDSM or other kink,
- Compulsivity related to sex (sex addiction), love (love addiction), or porn (porn addiction), or hypersexuality that has caused a problem in your life,
- Infidelity and betrayal trauma,
- Sexual anorexia or avoidance,
- Performance anxiety.
How long will I be in therapy? Is there a timeline for the Modern Intimacy mindset?
Everyone is different, so it is difficult to say how long you can expect to be in any form of therapy. Most of our clients report feeling better and seeing changes within six to eight therapy sessions. We do not want people to become dependent on therapy, so we work with you to help you achieve your goals in a time frame that allows for sustainability. Your treatment plan is a collaboration between you and your therapist.
