Therapy in DC

Does Modern Intimacy Offer Therapy in DC & What is Your Area of Specialization?

Modern Intimacy does offer therapy in Washington DC. We are a group therapy practice who specializes in mental health, sexual health, and relationships. We offer both individual and couples therapy services as well as individual and couples sex therapy. Our passion is to help people live happy, fulfilled, and authentic lives and feel safe and connected within relationships. As an intimacy and relationship centered practice, we often notice how interconnected sexual health and mental health can be and how they intersect with each other. We work to help our clients move through whatever obstacles are in the way of thriving personally and relationally.

We pride ourselves on creating a practice that is inclusive, sex-positive, and free of shame and judgement. If you are in need of a provider who you can trust to be an ally to your identities and lived experiences, we’re here to be a safe space.

As a sex-positive therapy practice, we believe in normalizing talking about sex in therapy. Sex tends to be a more taboo subject, even though it’s a natural human inclination. At Modern Intimacy, you can feel free to discuss any and all topics related to sex without fear of judgement.

What Kind of Mental Health Professionals Work at Modern Intimacy

It can be challenging to find a therapist and parse through different credential acronyms, certifications, and orientations.  You might not be sure what you’re looking for or what mental health services you’re seeking. At our practice we have providers who offer a wide variety of treatment approaches, come from different educational backgrounds, and are at different phases of their professional careers to provide accessibility for most needs.

Our practice consists of student externs in training, pre-licensed therapists, licensed therapists, licensed psychologists, and certified sex therapists. All providers on our team have a passion specifically for helping clients navigate relationship and sex/intimacy challenges, no matter where they are in their mental health care career.

I’ve Never Done Therapy Before. What Can I Expect?

We’re glad that you are here and making steps to prioritize your mental and sexual health. Starting therapy, like any new experience, can be equally exciting and feeling comfortable can be difficult the first time. Our goal is to help make this process as seamless and comfortable as possible.

The first step is scheduling a complimentary consultation with one of our Intake Specialists so we can ensure that Modern Intimacy is a good fit for you. During this call we will ask a few questions about your goals for therapy, relevant background, and any notable preferences. Once we learn more about your needs and goals, if we have a good therapeutic fit on our team, we will recommend a therapist on our team who we believe will be a good fit for you.

Next, we will help coordinating a first appointment with the recommended therapist. Most first therapy sessions include providing relevant background information and what has led up to you coming to therapy. Your therapist will explain to you how they plan to approach your work together and provide time for you to ask any questions or talk through any concerns.

What Modalities or Approach Do Your Therapists in Washington DC Utilize?

The modality, orientation, or theoretical approach to therapy depends on the therapist and what they resonate with. Many of our clinicians have an eclectic approach, meaning they utilize aspects of several different modalities to holistically work with clients. We utilize both evidence based and experiential approaches. The modality a therapist uses will most often depend on the goals for therapy, the client’s needs, and appropriate treatment plan. Some of the common modalities and approaches used at Modern Intimacy can include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Psychodynamic
  • Attachment Theory
  • Trauma-Informed Therapy
  • PACT Couples Therapy
  • Feminist Theory
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Positive Psychology
  • Family Systems
  • Humanistic

Do You Offer In-Person and Telehealth Services?

At this time, Modern Intimacy is only offering therapy in DC through Telehealth or video based therapy sessions. While we have therapists on our team who are licensed in Washington DC, we do not have a physical office space at this time and thus sessions are conducted virtually.

Your privacy is of utmost importance. To ensure confidentiality, we use a HIPAA-compliant Telehealth platform which securely protects your sessions and personal information.

In Addition to privacy, we also want you to be comfortable within your space for online therapy. We highly recommend choosing a spot that is quiet and private so you can speak freely. Please note that sessions are not able to be conducted if you are driving a car for maintaining your safety and sessions are not able to continue if you are in a public setting as it would compromise your privacy. To avoid these situations, a quiet room in your house or an office tends to be best.

Do You Accept Insurance or Offer Sliding Scale Rates?

Modern Intimacy is not currently paneled with any insurance providers. We are happy to provide a superbill for services which can be submitted to your insurance company for out of network reimbursement. To inquire about availability, we strongly recommend calling your insurance provider and inquiring about your exact insurance plan benefits. Please note that Modern Intimacy does not send superbills on our clients’ behalf and clients are responsible for obtaining details of superbill requirements per their specific plan.

For those who need more assistance, we do offer sliding scale rates, when available. Please contact us to discuss sliding scale availability and rate details in more depth.

We understand that therapy costs require a significant financial investment. We do our best to accommodate client’s needs and are happy to provide outside referrals if we are not a good fit for your financial needs.

What Are The Next Steps in Scheduling?

If you’re ready to book an appointment, we invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our Intake Specialists so we can ensure that we can help with your goals and answer any questions you might have. During this call, we will recommend a therapist on our team who would be a good fit and can help coordinating a first appointment should that be your decision to move forward.
