Individual Counseling For Mood Disorders, Addiction, Sex/Relationship Challenges, Improving Self-Esteem/Self-Confidence & More

How Do I Know If I Need Individual Therapy?

Deciding when to seek out individual therapy can be a complex question. You don’t have to wait until your lowest point to ask for help. Getting help and feeling better, starts when you decide you’re ready to receive support and for things to be different. As opposed to group therapy, individual counseling offers you one-on-one attention.

Individual talk therapy can be helpful for anyone. Whether you’re facing life stressors, past or current trauma, sexual problems, substance abuse and addictions. Individual therapy can also help with socialization skills, developing healthy boundaries, improving your relationships, concerns with self-esteem, depression, anxiety or anything that is causing distress. Individual therapy can also assist with major life changes such as starting a new job, moving, getting married or divorced, dating, or having a child.

Starting individual therapy can sometimes feel daunting. However, it is a great way to improve your life, your mental health, or explore what has been keeping you from living our best life. If you’re wondering if it’s time to talk with someone, we invite you to take that brave step towards self-care and discovery.

I Don’t Even Know What’s Wrong. Can Individual Therapy Help Me If I Don’t Know What I’m Feeling?

It’s not uncommon to be confused about how you feel. Certain experiences can make it difficult to process emotions and feel. If you’re not sure what you’re experiencing, or don’t know how to describe it, that can be a sign it’s time to seek professional help.

It’s perfectly okay not to have all the answers. Big emotions are reason enough to explore more with a professional. It may seem overwhelming at first, but individual therapy can help make sense of the various aspects of your life.

What Issues Do You Treat With Individual Therapy?

At Modern Intimacy, we specialize in treating the difficulties that lie at intersection of mental health concerns, relationships, sex and intimacy. We focus on treating trauma of all types (physical, emotional, sexual, spiritual, financial, etc.). Additionally, we help people navigate all kinds of challenges. If you are seeking help for addiction and compulsive behaviors, intimacy, healthy boundaries, sexuality, relationship issues, eating disorders, concerns related to body image, mood disorders and personality disorders, Modern Intimacy can help.

There are many types of therapy. Research studies indicate most forms of therapy, including psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other forms of talk therapy and somatic therapy can help improve your quality of life. The most consistent variable to influence whether individual psychotherapy is helpful is the quality of the relationship you have with your therapist.

I’ve Tried Individual Therapy Before & It Didn’t Work — What If I’m Beyond Help?

No one is beyond help. Period. Finding the right therapist and treatment is a process. It can be difficult to know if you’re working with the right therapist for your needs. It’s possible the individual therapy you received in the past wasn’t the best fit for your needs. If individual therapy didn’t bring you relief before, don’t let that stop you from trying again. Sometimes, it’s a question of timing.

At Modern Intimacy, we offer a free 30-minute phone consultation to assess your needs and ensure safety, confidentiality, and empathy, no matter your struggle. During the consultation, we make sure there will be a potential match for you with one of our therapists. We are happy to answer any and all questions to make your experience as seamless as possible. If we are not the right fit, we’ll help you find someone who is.

How Long Do I Have To Be in Individual Therapy Before I Feel Better?

The length of individual therapy depends on your personal needs and therapeutic goals. Some people experience positive effects and find relief in two to six sessions, and for others, the path is longer. There is no right or wrong way to be in therapy. Everyone is different. We are here to help support and guide you through any fears, anxieties, and bumps along the road.

What Should I Know Before My First Session?

In order to make the most of your time with your therapist, you will receive all the necessary forms and paperwork digitally before you get started. This makes it easier for you to get to the core of your goals in the session sooner. Once forms are completed and received, your first individual therapy session can officially begin.

The first few sessions of individual therapy are a dedicated period of time for you and your therapist to develop good working rapport. In that time, you will outline your treatment goals together. Initial sessions are designed to get to know you in more depth, so your therapist can holistically help you work toward your stated objectives. Following, the therapist and client will work collaboratively to build a treatment plan that addresses all of your goals, while cultivating your inherent strengths along the way. And yes… you do have inherent strengths!
