Online Sex Therapy + Other Teletherapy Services In California, New York, Florida, Illinois, and Colorado

What is teletherapy?

Teletherapy is online therapy, as opposed to traditional face to face in-person sessions. Modern Intimacy offers HIPAA compliant online counseling and teletherapy. The live video sessions for online individual therapy, couples therapy or sex therapy are conducted through a secure and confidential video conferencing platform.

Teletherapy sessions work just like regular therapy. However, online therapy gives people access to licensed professionals from the comfort of their own homes. All you need is a working device, a private space to feel comfortable, and a strong internet connection.

Online sex therapy can also help with other sexual issues. Certified Sex Therapists, who belong to the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) specialize in sex therapy and can utilize teletherapy to help you address myriad sexual problems. You can address sexual dysfunction, like erectile dysfunction, learn how to improve your sex life or sexual health, or become sexually active for the first time or after abstinence.

Is Teletherapy Private? I’m Scared To Talk About My Issues Online.

Your privacy is our chief priority when it comes to both in-person and teletherapy sessions. To ensure your sessions will be protected, confidential and secure, Modern Intimacy uses a HIPAA compliant video platform for all sessions.

Your comfort and safety are imperative to the process and progress of online therapy. We also recommend creating a space in your home or office that feels safe and private.

Make sure you won’t be disturbed, and place distractions (i.e., other devices and programs, partners, roommates or children, etc.) on silence or out of sight. We can help you curate the best environment for teletherapy, so you’re able to enjoy all of the benefits of a traditional setting.

Do My Partner And I Have To Be In The Same Space For Virtual Couples Therapy?

We understand there are sometimes geographic limitations for couples, that prevent them from being in the same space during a session. This is especially true during the pandemic. Best practice involves couples being in the same space during sessions. However, in some cases, your therapist can work with you in different locations.

Do I Have To Keep My Video On? What Is A Teletherapy Session Like?

Therapy is a visual and connective process between you and your therapist. Therapists rely heavily on facial expressions, body language, and other physical cues to assess for shifts in your emotional experience, and overall well-being.

We certainly understand that it can feel anxiety-inducing to be on camera, but rest assured, there is no judgment on the part of your therapist. They are on video too, and know how it can feel. Your therapist can help you turn off or minimize the part of the screen that allows you to see yourself, so the session feels more natural.

A teletherapy session is similar to traditional therapy in the sense that you’re able to address goals you have, remotely. The session will begin as it typically does and you are free to discuss whatever is on your mind.

Certain modalities, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and others, are even able to be done through teletherapy. If teletherapy is not appropriate for your goals or safety needs, your therapist can help you find other resources and options.

There is also the safety and convenience of conducting teletherapy for treatment in the privacy of your own home. Although therapy is nothing to be ashamed of, for some people there is added comfort if they can avoid physically going to a practitioner’s office, reducing the anxiety or inconvenience of traveling to an office.

How Much Does Online Therapy Cost?

Rates for teletherapy are consistent with rates for in-person sessions. They vary depending on the kind of therapy you are seeking (individual, couples, or group) and the therapist’s experience level and credentials. Some therapists are able to offer a sliding scale rate, temporarily or permanently. All sliding scale rates are determined for those with financial hardship.

Modern Intimacy is not in-network with any health insurance providers. However, a super bill can be provided to you to submit to your insurance provider. If there are any out of network benefits available through your plan, you can be reimbursed. Please note, a super bill is not a guarantee of benefit or reimbursement. It is your responsibility to coordinate reimbursement with your insurance provider.

Can the Modern Intimacy Therapists Work With Me Even If We Don’t Live In The Same State?

At this time, Modern Intimacy is able to offer therapy or sex therapy to people who live in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, and New York. If you live outside the listed states, and therapy with a Modern Intimacy therapist is not an option, one of Modern Intimacy’s coaching programs or online courses may be a good option.

Our coaching programs and online courses are rooted in trending research and best practices. They all include psychoeducation, self-directed exercises, and support for concerns such as healing from trauma, healing from toxic relationships, overcoming sex and porn addiction, and more.

I’m Worried Teletherapy Won’t Feel Real. Can It Truly Help Me With My Goals?

There is a different feel between teletherapy sessions and in-person therapy. Teletherapy may not feel exactly the same. But, research indicates that it can be just as effective in addressing most clinical concerns.

Many people prefer online therapy to traditional therapy. Others have expressed gratitude to have access to mental health support, even if it’s not typical in-person sessions.

With teletherapy, you can control your setting and the comfort of your space. You can also have more flexibility to schedule sessions on your time.
