Couples Therapy in Portland & Throughout Maine
I Think My Partner and I Need Couples Therapy. How Can Modern Intimacy Help?
The fact that you are here on our website looking for ways to improve or strengthen your relationship speaks volumes. It’s okay to need help with stuck points in relationships and the best thing you can do for yourself, and your partner(s) is to be open and willing to find more sustainable solutions together as a team. At Modern Intimacy, we understand just how important secure and fulfilling relationships are to mental health. When our most important relationships suffer, it’s not uncommon for people to struggle with their overall wellbeing and it can be challenging for many to admit that something might be off and in need of addressing.
Relationships don’t come with a training manual and for many people, they are operating in relationships from wounded parts of themselves. We believe that couples have the ability to thrive and might just be missing the tools to move past the pain points in a way that feels collaborative. If that feels like your relationship, then you’re in the right place for counseling in Portland or the state of Maine.

Do You Offer Marriage Counseling?
We work frequently with couples who are looking for premarital and post-marital counseling. Marriage can be a major relational transition and can understandably come with some anxiety and assurance that your relationship is being set up for success. Marriage counseling can be a great way to talk through fears, discuss expectations and values, develop a game plan for overcoming adversity that might arise, and overall help you feel like a team and on the same page.
Do You Work with Polyamorous and Ethically Non-Monogamous Couples?
We do! When opening Modern Intimacy, it was important for us to create a space that is accepting and welcoming to people of all walks of life. All too often, we hear from couples who have an alternative relationship style and feel like they are not able to share that in therapy due to fears of judgment, safety concerns, and/or being pathologized. As a relationship and sex therapy practice, we are not in the business of imparting any agenda on your relationship, instead, we are here to help you and your partner(s) thrive in whatever way feels congruent with your needs, preferences, and goals. Additionally, at Modern Intimacy, we are committed to ensuring our practice is Kink/BDSM, Alt-relationship lifestyle, and LGBTQ+ affirming.
My Partner and I Don’t Have Major Issues, but Could Use Guidance in One Area, Would We Still Be Good Candidates for Couples Sessions?
Although it’s a popular myth, couples counseling is not just for couples who are one bad fight away from throwing in the towel. Of course, that does happen, but not every couple that walks through our doors is on the brink of a breakup. If it helps, you might think of couples therapy as a relationship tune up, similar to the routine tune up when you have a car. There may not be anything concerningly wrong with the car, but it’s still good to get the oil changed, put air in the tires, and other important upkeep. The same can be true with relationships as they can be in need of check ins as well, arguably more often even than the car.
Whether you are looking for someone to help you and your partner move through a recurring argument or would like suggestions on how to feel more connected to each other after noticing some distance, couples therapy can be just as helpful for those who have a goal or two they want to work on as it is for the couple is crisis.
My Partner and I are Ready to Book a Session. What are the Next Steps?
